Throughout its tumultuous past, Balmerino Abbey endured its share of trials. It is rumoured that the abbey fell victim to a devastating fire orchestrated by English forces in December 1547, and it suffered further damage in 1559 during the fervour of Scottish Protestant conflicts.

Ghostly apparitions of monks have been sighted laboriously pushing wheelbarrows across the hallowed grounds as if trapped in an eternal cycle of duty.
