The Location

Perched above the River Leven, close to the town of Markinch, the tower-house of Balgonie Castle is the oldest complete keep in Fife. Built for the King's treasurer, Sir Thomas Sibbald, in the 14th century, possibly on the site of an earlier fortification, many famous characters from Scotland's history have visited the castle, including King James, Mary, Queen of Scots, and Rob Roy MacGregor.
