The Location
The Edinburgh Vaults, also known as the South Bridge Vaults, are a labyrinth of tunnels beneath the South Bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland. Completed in 1788, the vaults served as taverns, cobblers’ shops, and storage spaces for illicit items, including the bodies of victims of serial killers Burke and Hare for medical experiments.
As the conditions in the vaults worsened due to dampness and poor air quality, the businesses relocated, and the very poorest citizens moved in. However, it is believed that even they left by around 1820. The existence of the inhabitants was only discovered in 1985 during an excavation,…
