The Location
When it opened in 1888, prisoners at Peterhead Prison (Scotland’s only convict prison) were put to work quarrying granite to be used in the construction of the nearby harbour. Work was not completed until 1956, by which time the prison had gained a reputation for housing hardened prisoners. It was then turned into a high-security prison, earning the nickname ‘Scotland’s Alcatraz’ due to the nature of some of those held there.
In 2012, the prison began to be cleared, and, in 2013, it was decommissioned. Three years later, it reopened as a tourist attraction, giving a fascinating insight into the conditions over its 125-year history, telling the stories of some notorious convicts and what it was like to serve as an officer.
