The Location

Maybole Castle has stood prominently in the Ayrshire town for centuries. Commonly dated to the late 16th century, the surviving structure may be slightly later.

The castle served as a winter residence for the Earls of Cassillis. Although not a defensive stronghold, its walls, some over two metres thick, offered considerable protection. Part of the building was demolished in 1805, with the remainder repaired and extended. It survived a fire in 1919 and remained a residence until the 1980s, later becoming an adult education centre. Recent renovations have now brought it back into use.
